...at Fort Hall we went on with the Hudson's Bay Company Express. We crossed the Blue Mountains and followed the Umatilla valley down to the lowlands. Near the present city of Pendleton we struck north, going to Dr. Whitman's mission, where I waited for the emigrants to join me. It was two weeks before they arrived. Dr Whitman was very good to me. He made me welcome to all he had. I liked him much. At Oregon City I met a Hudson's Bay man who told me that many of my people, former employees of the Hudson's Bay Company had settled on the French prairie, so I went up there.
