...Many years later, when Mr. Matthieu was 95 years old, I again visited him and he told me of the Wolf meeting at Champoeg, at which the provisional government of Oregon was formed.

"All of my old associates are gone," said Mr. Matthieu. "I believe, of all the men I knew when I came to this country, I feel most kindly toward Dr. John McLoughlin, for I never knew a man more just, more charitable or more kindly.

Of all the people at the Wolf meeting of 1843, I only am left."
