Some years ago, while
traveling on horseback through western Oregon, I stopped
overnight at the home of F.X. Matthieu at Champoeg. As we
sat in front of the old-fashioned fireplace with its
blazing oak back log and its fir knots, Mr. Matthieu told
me of the days when Oregon was a self-sufficient empire
under the provisional form of government.
