Joe Meek - Mountain Man and Trapper
|
|||||
When it came to fighing Indians or hunting, trapping, breaking horses or making long dangerous trips, there were few men as willing and as good as father was, but he had no liking for manual labor. He was a great hand to make friends. You couldn't know him without liking him. He was a fine story-teller, witty and always playing jokes. My father was very indifferent about his dress. He didn't believe that fine feathers made fine birds.

| One
time he went to Portland and saw an English vessel in the
river. Father was roughly dressed. One of the officers, a
young chap in a Naval uniform, began making fun of
father. He said, "Old man, how long have you been
here? By your looks you must have been here a long
while." The day was clear and from the deck of the the sip they had a fine view of Mt. Hood. Father pointed to Mt. Hood and said, "D'ye see that thar mountain? When I first came, where that mountain stands was a hole in the ground." Not long after that father was appointed United States marshal. He watched this young officer who had made fun of him and found he was smuggling whiskey, so he arrested him.
