Joe Meek - Mountain Man and Trapper
|
|||||
A year or so later while father and the other mountain men were in camp, Dr. Marcus Whitman, Reverend H.H. Spalding, and W.H. Gray, with their wives, -- for they were all newly married-- came to the trappers camp. When father's wife, the Nez Perce girl, learned the Spaldings were to go to the Nez Perce tribe as missionaries, she said nothing to father, but stole away from the camp and went with them, taking their little baby, Helen Mar Meek.

| Father,
when he came back from looking after his traps, learned
they had gone, so he traveled fast and overtook them at
Fort Hall. His Indian wife wouldn't come back, she wanted
to go to her people. Later father arranged for Helen, his little daughter, to go to the Whitman mission to be educated. She was sick with measles at the time Dr. and Mrs. Whitman and the others were killed and died of neglect shortly after the massacre. Father went to the Nez Perce village at the forks of Salmon river. The chief of this branch of the Nez Perces was Tou-u-len-en. This chief was deeply interested in the story of the Bible which Spalding was preaching at Lapwai.
