Joe Meek - Mountain Man and Trapper
|
|||||
In those days St. Louis was the outfitting point for Indian traders and trappers, who took their goods over the Santa Fe trail to the southwest and who trapped beaver in the Rocky mountains. My father and two other young men, Newell and Ebberts, hired out to Captain William Sublette of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company.

| My
memory is good and I could talk to you for hours and tell
you of the adventures my father had while he was a
mountain man and trapper. He put in a good deal of his
time fighting the Indians o dodging them for the Indians
resented the trappers coming into their country, killing
the game and trapping beavers. The American Fur Company and the Rocky Mountain Fur Company were rivals so when father was not fighting the Blackfeet or the Crows, he was fighting the rival trappers. One time William Sublette and my father were out together and were captured by the Indians. The Indians held a council and decided to kill Sublette and my father by torture.
